I was born and brought up in Edinburgh where I now live. After reading English at Oxford University in the eighties I became keyboard player for the Woodentops. I obtained my PhD on Henry James in 1995 and have been writer in residence for Shetland and novelist in residence for St. Andrews University. I have also edited the arts magazine, The List.
In 1996 I was joint winner (with Graham Swift) of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction for my first novel Justine. My second novel Pandoras Box was shortlisted for the Stakis Prize for Scottish Writer of the Year. I am also winner of a Creative Scotland Award which enabled me to write my third novel Pharos. The Falconer my fourth novel was published last year by Two Ravens Press. The Existential Detective was published on June 28th 2010 by Two Ravens Press.
